NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont men's tennis team bounced back from their Saturday loss at Jacksonville State and defeated UAB 5-2 in a non-conference match held Sunday at Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville.
The Bruins earned the first point of the match by sweeping all three doubles matches. At position one, the #77 ranked duo of Hendrik Inno and Marko Ilic defeated #50 Michal Lusovsky and Roman Postolka 6-3. Then at two, sophomore Jake Briggs and senior Joan Valy beat Giovani Pasini and Nikolai Manchev 6-3. Finally at number three, junior Vincent Sterkens and sophomore Grant Kelly beat Tom El Safadi and Jasper Van Kleef 6-4.
In singles, Belmont earned wins in four of the six matches to clinch the victory over the visiting Blazers. At one, Inno defeated Postolka 7-6, 7-5. Then at three, Valy beat Van Kleef in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Sterkens won at four over Pasini in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, while at five, Briggs outlasted Manchev in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Sunday's win marked the first for the Bruins over UAB in the Division I era. Until today, BU was 0-6 versus UAB.
The men's tennis team (9-9) will be back on the court this Friday as they host Eastern Illinois at 1:00pm at Centennial Sportsplex.
