NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont Women's tennis team defeated Eastern Illinois, 5-2, on Friday afternoon at Nashboro Village Tennis Center.
The Bruins took the doubles point after defeating the Panthers at two and three. Drew Hawkins and Lauren Carelli defeated Abby Carpenter and Karla Contreras 6-3 at No. 2, while Maria Plaksina and Terra Sheldon defeated Claire Martin and Shelby Anderson 6-1 at No. 3.
The Bruins took four of the six matches in singles to clinch the win. Allen defeated Carpenter 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3. At No. 4. Plaksina defeated Martin 6-0, 6-3. Sheldon defeated Contreras 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Sarah Brackin was leading Anderson 5-0 when Anderson retired due to an injury.
With the win, the Bruins improve to 10-6 on the season, 2-1 in OVC play.
The Bruins will continue OVC play against SIUE on Saturday at Centennial Sportsplex. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
