WESTON, Fla. – The Belmont men's golf team has advanced to the finals of the GWU President's Day Match Play Championship held this week at The Club at Weston Hills in Weston, Florida.
In their first round match on Monday morning, the Bruins swept St. Bonaventure 6-0. In the first match, junior Jack Uselton defeated Danny Gianniny 4 &3. Freshman Jack Bergstrom edged Andrew Lacongo in the second match 2&1. Fellow freshman Luke Whitney was victorious in the third match, beating Zach Craddock 3&1.
Junior Bogle LaRue squeaked past Lance Sininger in his match 1 UP, while junior Evan Davis won his match by the same score over Christian Chapman. Freshman Alex Whitehead won the final match as he beat Nolan Ditcher 2&1.
In their afternoon semifinal match, Belmont edged old A-Sun rival FGCU 3.5 to 2.5. The Eagles took the early lead when Doug Smith defeated Whitney 6&5. The Bruins tied the match when Davis beat Mark Iwinski, Jr. 5&3.
After Bergstrom halved his match with Luke Farmer, the two teams traded wins as Whitehead earned a 1 UP win over Brent Fredericksen, while FGCU's J.T. Barker tied the match at 2.5-2.5 when he edged Bogle LaRue 1 UP. BU clinched the match victory when Uselton defeated Tyler Carlson 2&1.
With the win, Belmont heads to the championship match and will face a familiar foe in fellow OVC member Austin Peay. The match is set to begin Tuesday morning at 8:04am CT. Check @BelmontMGolf on Twitter for updates.
