NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont University men's tennis team responded from Monday's loss with a 7-0 win over DePaul on Wednesday at the Belmont Tennis Complex.
Senior Marko Ilic claimed his seventh singles win of the season, officially tying Renato Antun (2008-13), Felipe Abreu (2003-07) and Felipe Lima (2002-06) for fifth on the list on the program's career singles win list with 52 career wins. Ilic needs just two more to tie Rafael Matos (2008-12) for fourth on the program's career singles list.
Following Jake Briggs/Arthur Toledo's doubles victory, Ilic/Taisei Miyamoto fell short in their doubles match 6-1. The freshmen doubles team of Diego Castro/Tomas Luis, however, scored a 6-4 doubles victory to give Belmont the doubles point and the 1-0 lead.
The Bruins responded by sweeping the singles portion of the match, with Ilic, Toledo, Luis, Castro, Miyamoto and freshman Alfred Wallin all picking up victories to give Belmont the sweep. This is Belmont's third 7-0 sweep of the season, marking the third one in their last six matches.
"I think we definitely had a better performance today than on Monday against Tennessee Tech," Director of Tennis Mauricio Antun said. "I felt like everyone was locked in from the get go and ready to bounce back. We did just that and I was very proud of our team. We will get some rest and get ready for Saturday against Austin Peay."
Belmont (7-2) continues Ohio Valley Conference play on Saturday, facing Austin Peay at 3 p.m. at the Belmont Tennis Complex. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fan attendance at Belmont home tennis matches will be restricted to a small number of family members of the Belmont tennis team players.
