NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont University men's tennis team picked up its first Ohio Valley Conference win of the 2021 season, defeating Austin Peay 7-0 on Monday at the Belmont Tennis Complex.
Senior Marko Ilic claimed his eighth singles win of the season, officially moving into fifth on the program's career singles win list with 53 career wins. Ilic needs just one more to tie Rafael Matos (2008-12) for fourth on the program's career singles list.
Every Belmont player who played on Monday, both singles and doubles, picked up a win. Ilic/Taisei Miyamoto moved to an 8-2 on the season with their doubles win, with Diego Castro/Tomas Luis picking up their sixth doubles win of the season. Jake Briggs/Arthur Toledo moved to 5-2 on the season thanks to a 6-2 victory in their doubles match.
Toledo picked up his eighth win of the season following his singles victory at the No. 2 spot, with Luis and freshman Alfred Wallin picking up their sixth win of the season after claiming a pair of singles victories. Castro moved to 7-2 in the singles portion of the season after his 6-0, 7-6 victory and Miyamoto claimed his fifth singles win of the season in dominating fashion (6-2, 6-1).
"This was a good team win today," Director of Tennis Mauricio Antun said. "Everyone was focused on the task on hand and did their job. Tennis wise, we could have done some things better. But a 7-0 win against a conference opponent is always great. We're excited to play EIU on Friday."
Belmont (8-2, 1-1) goes on the road on Friday continue OVC play, traveling to Charleston, Ill. to face Eastern Illinois.
