NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Belmont University men's tennis team won its 10th match of the season on Saturday, defeating Tennessee State 7-0 at Hadley Park.
Saturday's victory marks the eighth consecutive season where Belmont has won at least 10 matches in a season. Senior Marko Ilic claimed his 55th career singles win 6-2, 6-1 victory, claiming fourth on the program's career singles wins list. Ilic needs just four more wins to tie Fausto Rocha (2004-09) for third on the program's career singles wins list.
With Ilic and senior Taisei Miyamoto's 6-1 doubles victory, their 10th doubles win of the season moves them into a tie for 14th in program history with Robin Demasse/Bruno Russo (2014-15) and Fausto Rocha/Javier Rodriguez (2004-05) on the program's single season doubles victories list. Ilic/Miyamoto needed just one more doubles win to tie Rodrigo/Amaral (2008-09) and Matt Fitzpatrick/Michael Moretti (2003-04) for 12th on the program's single season doubles victories list.
The doubles team of Jake Briggs and junior Arthur Toledo earned their sixth doubles win of the season with a 6-1 victory, allowing Belmont to take the doubles point. After Ilic's singles victory, Toledo claimed his 11th singles victory of the season to give the Bruins a 3-0 match lead.
Freshman Tomas Luis helped the Bruins claim the match with his ninth singles victory of the season, with freshman Diego Castro picking up his eighth singles victory of the season immediately after. Miyamoto earned his seventh singles victory of the season with a win at the No. 5 spot while freshman Alfred Wallin moved to 8-4 in 2021 thanks to a singles victory at the No. 6 spot to give the Bruins all seven points.
"We haven't played indoors in a while, so we had a tough time to adjust in the beginning," Director of Tennis Mauricio Antun said. "After a few games, we started playing a lot better. We're looking forward to our last weekend of the regular season next week."
Belmont (10-3, 3-1) plays its final home match of the regular season against UAB on April 17 at 1 p.m. at the Belmont Tennis Complex. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, fan attendance at Belmont home tennis matches will be restricted to a small number of family members of the Belmont tennis team players.
