NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont University volleyball dropped a hard-fought match to Indiana State at home on Saturday night, falling 3-1 for their first loss of the season.
After getting behind on the wrong end of a 25-13 result in the first set, Belmont (2-1) made the second set much more competitive. Although the Bruins trailed for nearly the entirety of the frame, they were able to stay within striking distance thanks to big kills from Ally Peterson and Taylor Floyd.
Then, trailing 20-17 in the second set, Belmont pounced with an astounding 8-0 run to even up the match with a 25-20 set win.
Indiana State led for much of the third set, then withstood another Bruin run to take set three 25-22. The Sycamores closed it out with a 25-20 finish in the fourth for the 3-1 win.
Laura Shoopman led the way offensively for Belmont with 14 kills, while Taylor Floyd collected 13. Rachel McBride was everywhere on defense for the Bruins, tallying a game-high 26 digs, a career-high in any match that went fewer than five sets for the sophomore.
Facing a stellar Indiana State defense, Belmont was held to a .188 hitting percentage. Unlike the previous day, the Bruins couldn't much help from the service line, as they collected just three service aces across the four sets.
The win was Indiana State's 500th as a program since playing their first season in 1977.
Belmont will have nearly a full week off before they travel to Chicago, Ill., to take part in the UIC Invitational on Sept. 10-11. The Bruins will take on UIC, Chicago State, and Eastern Michigan across two days in the Windy City.
