Mariia Hlahola Gets Through Qualifying on Day One of ITA Regionals

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Beginning play at the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regional Championships Wednesday in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Belmont University women's tennis team combined for four match wins as freshman Mariia Hlahola moved through singles qualifying. The Kyiv, Ukraine, native won both of her opening singles matches in straight sets to advance to Thursday's main draw, while the Bruins won two of their three doubles qualifying matches.
 
Hlahola teamed up with sophomore Anastasiya Zholdakova to defeat Tennessee State's Daniela Koleva and Naomi von Bose 8-2 as the sophomore duo of Viktoria Kliimand and Abigail Solomon topped Middle Tennessee's Lilly-Sophie Schmidt and Muskan Gupta 8-3.
 
Both doubles pairs will begin Thursday's action at Tyson Park at 9 a.m. CT/10 a.m. ET vying for a spot in the 32-team main draw. Hlahola and Zholdakova will take on Xavier's Emily Flowers and Paulina Franco and Kliimand and Solomon will face Austin Peay's Jana Leder and Melody Hefti.
 
In singles, Hlahola bested the Blue Raiders' Noelle Mauro 6-2, 7-6 (2) in the first round of qualifying before defeating Butler's Chase Metcalf 6-1, 7-5. One of 16 to reach the main draw via qualifying, Hlahola will go up against Purdue's Kennedy Gibbs Thursday at 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET at the University of Tennessee's Dr. Robert L. Barksdale Tennis Stadium.
 
Zholdakova nearly got past her opening round opponent in qualifying, taking the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Coco Bosman to a 7-5 third set. Despite the loss, Zholdakova will join Kliimand and Solomon in the B singles flight Thursday.
 
Also competing in the B singles bracket will be graduate student Meredith Roberts, sophomore Aly Getty, freshman Libbie Hamilton and senior Taylor Trondson.
 
Roberts, Kliimand and Getty will play their round of 64 matches indoors at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center, while Zholdakova, Solomon, Hamilton and Trondson will be in action at Tyson Park. Roberts faces Middle Tennessee's Love-Star Alexis at 11 a.m. CT/12 p.m. ET and Kliimand will see Northern Kentucky's Mariajose Hernandez at 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET. Getty will meet the Bulldogs' Metcalf at 11:30 a.m. CT/12:30 p.m. ET as Zholdakova takes on Eastern Kentucky's Sasha Parkhomenko at 12:30 p.m. CT/1:30 p.m. ET. Also beginning at 12:30 p.m. CT/1:30 p.m. ET will be Solomon against Miami University (Ohio)'s Emilia Valentinsson. Hamilton will go up against Dayton's Elizabeth Hamilton at 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET and Trondson will match up with the Governors' Ayden Kujawa at 1:30 p.m. CT/2:30 p.m. ET.
 
All matches played on Tennessee's campus will have both live stats and live streaming.
