Women's Tennis Continues ITA Regionals Action Friday in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Continuing its week in Knoxville, Tennessee, the Belmont University women's tennis team picked up three additional match wins Friday at the 2022 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regional Championships. The Bruins won a pair of singles matches and earned a doubles victory as freshman Mariia Hlahola reached the round of 16 in the singles main draw.
 
Taking on the University of Memphis' Aran Teixido-Garcia in the round of 32, Hlahola picked up yet another straight-set triumph as she won 6-2, 7-5. Against Vanderbilt's Sonya Macavei, who is currently ranked No. 854 in the world on the WTA Tour, Hlahola made a valiant effort in the second set but ended up being edged 8-6 in a tiebreaker.
 
In doubles action Friday, the sophomore duo of Viktoria Kliimand and Abi Solomon advanced to the B flight semifinals thanks to a walkover win. They then defeated Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis' Sarah Lounsbury and Grace Lampman 8-3 in an extra match. The tandem of graduate student Meredith Roberts and senior Taylor Trondson were unable to overcome IUPUI's Marta Krakowski and Emma Dell in the B flight round of 16.
 
Sophomore Anastasiya Zholdakova also notched a singles victory Friday with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 rout of Tennessee State's Franka Sindici.
 
Also in extra singles play, sophomore Aly Getty battled Austin Peay's Asia Fontana in a three-set affair. After claiming a 6-3 opening set, Getty was unable to take a 10-8 third-set super tiebreaker. Solomon recovered from a 6-3 first set loss against the Jaguars' Meghan Bernard with a much more competitive second set but came up just short in a 7-4 breaker.
 
Belmont continues play Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT/10 a.m. ET with singles matches. Hlahola is set to play Purdue's Liz Norman, while Zholdakova takes on Middle Tennessee's Sana Garakani at 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET. Trondson will face Xavier's Blessing Nwaozuzu as freshman Libbie Hamilton meets Ball State's Jessica Braun at 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET indoors at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center. Getty will see Ball State's Amy Kaplan, also at 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET.
 
All matches played on Tennessee's campus will have both live stats and live streaming.
