BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Belmont men's tennis team is set up for success on Sunday as they compete at the CCB Collegiate Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.Â
Persistent rain on Saturday cancelled all singles and doubles matches, but with competition set to restart on Sunday morning, the Bruins are in position to make a splash after their strong play on Friday.
FRIDAY SINGLES
In the Crimson Draw, junior
Alfred Wallin won his first round match over Roman Postolka of UAB 6-2, 7-6, but fell in round two to Julien Penzlin of LSU 6-4, 6-4. In the consolation bracket, he will face Han Chan-Lin of Washington Sunday morning.
Two Bruins competed in the White Draw. Sophomore
Ian Cruz won his first two matches. He defeated Santiago Arredondo of Samford in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 and then beat Martin Bugai of UAB 6-7, 6-3, 6-0. He will face Kacper Dworak of Louisiana in the semifinals Sunday.Â
Junior
Tomas Luis won his first round match over Pedro Cressoni of ETSU 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, but fell in the next round to Tulane's Charles Berry 7-6, 1-6, 6-2. He will take on Nedim Suko of Washington in the consolation bracket Sunday.
In the Houndstooth Flight, junior Riccardo Trione has reached the semifinals. After a first round bye, he defeated Martin Schwartzman of Samford in straight sets 7-5, 6-2. He will face Juan Lombisano of ETSU in the semifinals tomorrow.Â
DOUBLES
In the Crimson Doubles Flight, Cruz and Trione will play Lusovsky and Postolka of UAB in a first round match tomorrow at 8:00am, while in the White Flight, Luis and Wallin will take on Chin-Lin and Yamaguchi of Washington in a first round match at 8:00am.Â
All matches are being played at The Country Club of Birmingham.
