BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Highlighted by Riccardo Trione's singles title and two consolation bracket victories, the Belmont men's tennis team wrapped up play at the CCB Collegiate Invitational held this weekend at the Country Club of Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama.
SINGLES
Trione captured the singles title in the Houndstooth Singles Flight. After defeating Juan Lombisano of ETSU in the semifinals 6-1, 7-5, he beat Southern Miss' Taras Ignatiuk in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
In the White Flight, sophomore
Ian Cruz fell in the semifinals to Kacper Dworak of Louisiana in three sets: 6-3, 3-6, 7-5. Junior
Tomas Luis lost in the quarterfinals to Charlie Berry of Tulane, but earned two wins in the winners consolation bracket by beating Nedim Suko of Washington 7-6, 7-5 and UAB's Carlos Gimenez in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 10-5.Â
Alfred Wallin went 1-1 on Sunday in the Crimson winners consolation bracket. He fell to Han Chih-Lin of Washintgon in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 10-5, but came back and beat Joao Ferreira of Alabama 7-6, 3-2.
DOUBLES
The duo of Wallin and Luis finished runner-up in the White Doubles Flight. They defeated Chih-Lin and Yamaguchi of Washington 6-2, then beat Samford's Mohandoss and Pickard 6-3. However, their run ended in the finals with a 6-2 loss to Louisiana's Dimitrov and Dworak 6-2.Â
In the Crimson Doubles Flight, Cruz/Trione lost their first round match to Lusovsky and Postolka of UAB 6-3, but captured the consolation bracket with wins over Bouchelaghem and Suko of Washington and ETSU's Cressoni and Pernas.
This tournament wraps up the fall season for the men's tennis team.Â
