NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - The Belmont University women's tennis team turned up the intensity and took home the win over Wofford University: 5-2.
Walking onto court one, all you had to do was read the fine print and you knew freshman Gina Feistel and senior Meredith Roberts are hard to beat together. The pairing were 4-1 entering this match. Further proving that they are like cheese and crackers, the duo got straight to work. In the first cut to Wofford, Feistel and Roberts beat Liz Massie and Lilie Steryous handily: 6-1.
Next up over on court two, the simmering seniors of Belmont were fighting for the first point of the match. Despite the spirited effort from Wofford's Breda Brennan and Brianna Wilbur, Somer Henry and Peyton Lee put them away: 6-4, to improve to 4-1 in doubles. Onward to the individual matchups.
In singles, Wofford battled the Bruins to the bitter end. In three of Belmont's wins, Wofford forced BU to score seven to take the set. But in the end, Henry handled the scare to take the three-set win in her second spring match as the number one singles option. Before that finish by Henry, Feistel handled her two sets on court two against Steryous with only one round lost in two sets.
Now just one point away from victory, Lee brought it home after losing her first set to Massie on court four. Putting the cherry on top of the sundae, freshman Viktoria Kliimand came back from 5-2 in set one to take the 7-5 jumpstart. It wasn't easy for Kliimand, but she closed out Emely Kahrs for the tiebreaker.
Now 5-3, the women's team will rest tomorrow before heading up to Vanderbilt on Sunday. The match will start at three p.m. in the Currey Tennis Center.
