Box Score STARKVILLE, Miss. – Belmont University Softball fell to Mississippi State, 7-3, Saturday in the final game at The Snowman Tournament at Nusz Park.
In the top of the first inning, Abi Ledbetter singled and advanced to second base when Alicia Veltri was hit by a pitch. But the promising scoring opportunity went by the boards.
The host Bulldogs responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame, aided by two Bruin errors.
Belmont got on the scoreboard in the third inning, as a MyKayla Spurlin bases loaded walk scored Ledbetter. The Bruins were poised to add more runs but left the bases loaded.
Kaley Varner got Belmont within 6-2 with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.
After Mississippi State tacked on a lone run in the bottom half, Belmont orchestrated a rally in the sixth inning.
One-out walks from Indy Cockrill and Varner and a Baie Ensio single loaded the bases. Cheyenne Cavanaugh scored Cockrill with an RBI sacrifice fly, but after an Ensio steal and a Ledbetter walk, Bulldogs pitcher Grace Fagan worked out of the jam.
