NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - The Bruins wrapped up non-conference play with five straight wins! Today, they vanquished the Alabama A&M Bulldogs 7-0 and have outscored their opponents 34-1 during this winning streak.
Doubles was challenging as the Bulldogs were pesky early on. Eventually though, Belmont's newly paired partners closed the deal. On court two, Taisei Miyamoto and Arthur Toledo turned away the compeitition and took their match: 6-2. Over on court three, senior Grant Kelly and Alfred Wallin improved to 2-1 together in their first spring match together since February 13th at UNC-Asheville.
Up 1-0 heading into singles, Belmont closed in on victory so fast you almost couldn't follow it without your head spinning. Court one belonged to Toledo as he won his fourth straight match. Toledo has not lost a set as the number one player since he played George Harwell at Vanderbilt on February 18th.
At court two, Tomas Luis was king. Before you could say the phrase "turn up", Luis had captured the two-set sweep with just two rounds lost in the fold. Next, we bounce over to court six where Alfred Wallin was working towards his usual result. Now 7-1, Wallin took home match point in two sets: 6-1, 6-0. With the match sealed, AAMU still played with intense pride on the line.
It wasn't easy, but after Miyamoto dropped his opponent in two sets, Belmont had to fight for another clean sheet. After Ian Cruz and Castro fell behind 1-0, they planted themselves in the ground and held firm. Two sets later, both men earned grizzled three-set victories.
Belmont ends non-conference 8-3 while Alabama A&M drops to 2-7. The Bruins will begin OVC play this Friday with a trip up the road to Tennessee State. The match will start at four p.m.
