Box Score CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University Softball sweeps Austin Peay in conference opening weekend. The Governors posed great competition against the Bruins but Belmont came out victorious on the weekend.
The Bruins started out hot on the delightfully sunny day in Tennessee to sweep the series, 14-7.
Lead off batter Cheyenne Cavanaugh ripped a base hit to left field to start the Bruins off. Quickly followed by another base hit from Baie Ensio. Both runners advanced on a pass ball. Abi Ledbetter with a smart at bat walks to claim first. Bases loaded Kristen Green roped a single up the middle bringing in Cavanaugh and Ensio, 2-0. Bases loaded again as Alicia Veltri walked. Elison Ollinger at the plate, laced a double up the middle to the back wall scoring a pair of runs, 4-0. Emily Cockrill added a hit to her name with a single to center field to bring in Veltri and Ollinger.
The Governors added four to their team total both on two run home runs in the bottom of the first and second, 6-4. The Governors scored on another homerun in the bottom of the third, 6-5.
After a scoring drought from the Bruins in the second and third innings, the Bruins posted three runs in the top of the fourth. Ledbetter singled to bring in Cavanaugh. Green ripped a double to score Ledbetter and Ensio, 9-5.
A scoreless fifth inning for the Bruins. The Governors lessened the deficit earning themselves two more runs off of a double, 9-7.
Green led off for the Bruins in the sixth, ripping a solo home run to left center, 10-7.
The Bruins secured the win in the top of the seventh, Ensio doubled up the middle, Ledbetter walked. Green brought in Ensio on a single. Ledbetter and Green on base, Alicia Veltri brought them home with a three run home run, 14-7.
