Box Score 2 COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University Softball swept the doubleheader against Tennessee Tech University in the Friday night lights affair in Cookeville. The Bruins defeated the Golden eagles 5-1 in eight innings and 13-4 in five innings.
An extremely competitive first game in Cookeville sent the teams into extra innings. The Bruins came out on top after a four run eighth inning.
Belmont struggled to get a piece of the ball in the first six innings against the Golden Eagles in game one. The Bruins allowed a single run in the sixth on a solo homerun. Golden Eagles' pitcher Alyssa Arden was on her way to pitch a no hitter until Elison Ollinger countered and ripped a solo homerun to tie the game 1-1 in the seventh.
This was all the spark the Bruins needed to go into extra innings. Top of the eighth bases loaded as a result of singles from Abi Ledbetter, Kristen Green, and Emily Cockrill. Belmont added two on a two RBI single from Ollinger for her second clutch play of the night. The Bruins added an additional two runs of insurance on a Kathryn Flowers single, her second career hit as a Bruin.
Belmont held the 5-1 score to earn their first win of the night in extra innings and end the Golden Eagles perfect home record.
The Bruins got after it fast in the second meeting of the day against the Golden Eagles.
A walk and a single to start the Bruins off in the first. Ledbetter with a sacrifice fly to send Cavanaugh home from second. Ollinger ripped her second homer of the day over the fence in center field, her fifth of the season for 2 RBI.
The Golden Eagles countered quickly in the first. A fielder's choice sent Carmen Betts home as well as a hit by pitch play sent in a Golden Eagle run. A one run game after the first, 3-2.
Belmont tallied a run in the second from a deep double coasted down the left field line courtesy of Ollinger to bring in Emily Cockrill on second from a single and stolen base.
Such a competitive game in Cookeville, the Golden Eagles tied the game with a two run homerun from Betts.
Two home runs, a double, a triple, five singles, and a walk the Bruins produced a nine run inning in the fifth. Cavanaugh with her second home run of the season and a two RBI home run at that. Back to back homeruns for the Bruins Green tallied her sixth on the season. Emily Cockrill with her first career triple to secure two of the Bruins nine runs. Lyle added her fifth double of the season in return for an RBI. Three Golden Eagles pitchers tried to save the inning but the Bruins were unstoppable.
The Bruins held the 13-4 lead to secure the win in five innings. On the day the Bruins recorded 18 runs, 22 hits, four homeruns, 18 RBI in 13 innings. An impressive day for Belmont looking for the series sweep tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT in Cookeville.
