CHARLESTON, Ill. - - Belmont got back to their winning ways and defeated the EIU Panthers earlier today during the Panthers' Senior Day.
Doubles was orderly as each court finished in numerical order. EIU would take Belmont's best punches to beat Tomas Luis and Diego Castro. However, Belmont's best duo kept their hopes of winning doubles alive. Jack Randall and Arthur Toledo took down Charles Courteau and Cameron Slabbert to set up the winner-take-first-point third doubles set. Alas, senior Leighton Brandon and freshman Tyler Carlin bested Taisei Miyamoto and Alfred Wallin to win the point.
In singles, Ian Cruz led the way to supplant Alfred Wallin for the team lead in wins. Cruz captured win number 12 of his spring after besting Slabbert in two rounds. Toledo followed suit and overcame his set one loss to Brandon by winning set two and three with identical 6-1 scores. Miyamoto followed with two sets of terrific play to seal point three for BU.
Court two featured the gritty duel between Luis and Kyrillou. Luis spoiled Kyrillou's last home match by winning the tiebreaker 7-2 to take the match in two sets. That win secured win number 12 for Belmont this spring.
After victory was captured, Randall broke his two-match losing streak by winning on court six. The only blemish in singles was given to Castro as he fell to Courteau.
Belmont will host Senior Day next Saturday to wrap up the regular season. We shall see if they can match the 2021 squad's win count.
