Sweep Success

Box Score

COOKVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont Softball swept the Tennessee Tech series to advance their conference record to 13-4. Final game of the series the Bruins showed up and showed out with 14 runs on 11 hits, three doubles, and one home run to secure the sweep.

The Bruins were after it quickly in the first. Leadoff hitter Cheyenne Cavanaugh was walked and proceeded to steal second for her twenty sixth stolen base on the season. In scoring position, Cavanaugh was brought home by a Kristen Green single where she advanced on the throw. Abi Ledbetter up, a similar single and play brought home Green allowing the Bruins to go up early.

A Belmont error and a strategic bunt allowed the Golden Eagles to score in the first and even out the game.

An eight spot inning for the Bruins in the second. Five walks from Alyssa Arden amongst the first two innings led to the Bruins reaching first. Lyle and Ensio both walked to start the second. Cavanaugh ripped a double to take the lead back. A sacrifice fly from Green sent Ensio home. Alicia Veltri walked, Ledbetter reached on a fielder's choice. Bases loaded for Emma Barnes, a single through the gap brings in two for the Bruins. Sacrifice fly for Emily Cockrill brings in another Bruin run. Belmont continued to add to their lead, Kaley Varner with a standup double to bring in a run. Lyle finalized the Bruins scoring in the second with a two run homer sent deep to left center passing the scoreboard.

A rapid one two three inning for the Bruins in the second, tactically made all of the right plays to keep their eight run lead. The Bruins left one on reaching on a walk in the third.

The Bruins left two on in the fourth, Varner walked and Lyle ripped a single to right but the Bruins were unable to score from the corners.

Another quick defensive inning for the Bruins in the fourth. The inning was finalized by Summers throwing out a Golden Eagle to the famous Ledbetter split.

Once the Bruins get started they are hard to stop. Belmont extended their lead on a Barnes single falling in the sweet spot between the infield and left field. Gabrielle Givers ripped the ball up the middle to score Barnes. Not done yet, Varner with a two run double sent rolling down the left field line.

The Golden Eagles had a spark of scoring in the fifth with a three run home run. The Bruins were still able to secure the win and sweep the series in five innings.
