NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Nothing stood in Belmont's way as they paved over Austin Peay for their eighth win in a row: 6-1.
All's well that end's well must start well. Not really a phrase, but still evident in how Belmont has been winning since late February. Doubles have set the tone all spring long. Today, they got the two they needed from their two winningest combos. Taisei Miyamoto and Alfred Wallin closed the book early with their first 6-0 doubles win. Next, the Bruins' leading pair of Jack Randall and Arthur Toledo won their third straight contest behind Toledo terrific defensive front and Randall's outstanding service aces.
Up 1-0, Belmont brought in five more wins to close the deal for win number 11 this spring. Accolades all around, one Bruin can't be ignored. For the first time all spring, Wallin was moved out of the sixth spot to the fifth slot. What did he do? Take a guess because it's elementary my dear Watson. He crushed his roudy competitor Hogan Stoker in two sets: 6-1, 6-0.
Since the fall schedule began, Wallin has won 17 of 18 singles matches. His one loss? Macsen Sisam of Vanderbilt University.
Wallin has been hard to stop. But he is just one sample of the bigger picture that illustrates Belmont's rise this spring. He is one of three Bruins with win streaks north of seven. Here's to more on the horizon.
Belmont is 11-3 after today's win and 2-0 in OVC action. The next opponent they face will be Louisville two Wednesdays from now at their place. Match start is scheduled for noon.
