NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Beginning its inaugural season as a Missouri Valley Conference member, the Belmont University women's tennis team welcomes in-state NCAA Division II member Lee University to the Ensworth Tennis Center Sunday morning. First serve is set for 11 a.m. on the indoor courts.

Â
Picked to win the MVC following a strong fall campaign, the Bruins received six first-place votes in last week's preseason poll. Under the direction of first-year head coach Dané Vorster, Belmont captured a pair of individual titles at the MVC Individual Championships this past October. Freshman
Mariia Hlahola, a native of Kyiv, Ukraine, claimed the league's top singles championship, while sophomore
Anastasiya Zholdakova, also a Kyiv, Ukraine, native, and graduate student
Meredith Roberts won the No. 3 doubles flight in Springfield, Missouri.
Â
Hlahola went on to reach the round of 16 in the singles main draw at the highly-competitive Intercollegiate Tennis Association Ohio Valley Regional Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the Bruins were dominant at their Belmont/Lipscomb Fall Invite to close out the fall season.
Â
Belmont went 18-8 in doubles play during the fall and notched 32 singles wins.
Â
Welcoming freshmen Hlahola and
Libbie Hamilton (Mobile, Ala.), the Bruins return six letter winners from a year ago. Belmont went 13-8 last spring and tied for second in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 5-2 league record. The 13 match victories were the most in a single season since 2004.
Â
The Bruins will play four of their first five matches in Nashville at the Ensworth Tennis Center. Belmont's MVC slate gets underway Sunday, March 19 when the Bruins host Valparaiso at the Belmont Tennis Complex on campus.
