NORMAL, Ill. – The Belmont University Volleyball Program (10-12, 4-4 MVC) took on Illinois State (7-12, 5-2 MVC). The Bruins fell in four to the Redbirds.
How it Happened
Belmont and Illinois State went point for point in set one.
Brooke Gilleland led the Bruins with five kills while
Kristen Clemons and
Sydney Willis added three kills each. Belmont held an early lead, but ISU later edged out the Bruins to take a close set one 23-25.
Set two was another battle to start.
Elizabeth Godfrey later rattled off two aces in a row to give the Bruins a 13-10 lead midway through the set. Belmont continued to attack and serve aggressively to take set two 25-21.
The Redbirds got off to a hot start with a 5-0 run to take an early 5-9 lead. A kill by Clemons and an error from ISU cut the Redbirds' lead to three midway through the set. ISU continued to put together runs down the stretch to claim set three 17-25.
Belmont had a strong start in the fourth. A kill from
Kamryn Olson and an ace from Clemons quickly put the Bruins up 5-2. The Redbirds went on to put together a 7-0 run to take the lead at 12-16. Belmont continued to fight and evened the score at 18 all off an ace from Olson. The rest of the set was back-and-forth where the Bruins ultimately fell 23-25.
