Women’s Soccer Falls to Drake in Regular Season Finale

Bruins Score Twice in Second Half on Senior Day

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University women's soccer (3-8-7, 2-3-5 MVC) hosted the Drake Bulldogs (12-3-3, 8-1-1 MVC) in the final regular season match of the season. The Bulldogs came into the match as the top team in the conference. Belmont, who already clinched a spot in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, celebrated their eight seniors before the match.

Despite a second-half comeback from the Bruins, Belmont fell to the eventual regular season champions, 3-2.

Drake jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Layla Kellbel scored her sixth goal of the season on a strike from 20 yards out. Madelyn Smith and Lily Overstreet picked up assists. Drake scored again in the 25th minute. Laura Riesenbeck served a ball into the penalty box, followed by a header from Emma Nagel, as Angela Gutierrez finished the play for her fifth goal of the season. The Bulldogs scored one more time before the halftime break. Hallie Peak snuck one past Sarah Doyle for her third goal of the season. Hannah Olson picked up the assist on the play. Drake led 3-0 at the break.

Belmont turned things around in the second half. Following a wave of substitutions, Belmont scored their first goal of the match. Freshman Kate Virtel turned nothing into something, as she scored her first collegiate goal in the 57th minute.

Just as the excitement seemed to have died down, Belmont capitalized on a corner kick opportunity in the 63rd minute. Drake attempted to clear the ball out of their penalty box, but gave Maci Pekmezian the perfect opportunity to score her sixth goal of the season. Belmont trailed by one heading into the final 27 minutes of play.

Belmont continued to press up the pitch, but Drake dialed up the defense to prevent Belmont from completing the comeback. In the end, the Bulldogs prevailed, 3-2.
