CARBONDALE, Ill. - - Belmont University women's soccer (2-6-6, 1-1-4 MVC) traveled to Southern Illinois (1-8-4, 0-5-1 MVC) Thursday night for a conference match against the Salukis. The Bruins controlled the match from the first whistle until the end. Confidence, resiliency, and swagger described the Bruins' play tonight.
Big-time players make big-time plays, and that's what
Anna Sweeney did tonight. Her second-half goal gave the Bruins their first conference victory of the season, and first win over Southern Illinois in program history.
Belmont outshot the Salukis 15-8 in the match and applied relentless pressure.
Avery Nowak led the team with four shots. The Bruins also earned 11 corner kicks in the match.
After a scoreless first half, Belmont's aggressive forward play was rewarded with a free kick roughly 40 yards out from goal.
Kennedy Wise, in her first start since Sept. 7, struck a beautiful ball off a free kick into the penalty box. Sweeney soared above the crowd and stunned the Salukis with a header that one-bounced into the goal.
Belmont withstood any last-chance attacks from SIU, and went on to win the match, 1-0.
