Women's Tennis Hosts ETSU and WKU Over Weekend

Bruins Welcome Buccaneers Saturday and Lady Toppers Sunday to the Ensworth Tennis Center

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After splitting matches last weekend, on the road and at home, the Belmont University women's tennis team continues its spring campaign indoors at the Ensworth Tennis Center this weekend. The Bruins host East Tennessee State University Saturday at 4 p.m. before welcoming Western Kentucky to the Music City Sunday for an 11 a.m. first serve.

Live scoring of both matches can be found at BelmontBruins.com.

Off to a 2-1 start, Belmont defeated visiting Central Arkansas last Saturday in Nashville. Playing four of their first five matches of the season at the Ensworth Tennis Center, the Bruins enjoy one more weekend at home before beginning a strenuous five-match road stretch next weekend.

Through the opening three matches of 2023, Belmont remains perfect at the No. 1 and No. 4 singles positions thanks to the talented play of freshman Mariia Hlahola and sophomore Viktoria Kliimand. The doubles duo of sophomore Anastasiya Zholdakova and graduate student Meredith Roberts are also undefeated on the young season with a 3-0 record.

The Bruins' lone setback came last Friday against Austin Peay in Evansville, Indiana, where the host Governors got past Belmont, 5-2.

The Buccaneers are 3-3 after claiming a 6-1 win at Lipscomb Friday. ETSU began its season in Hawaii where it picked up 5-2 victories at the University of Hawai'i and Hawai'i Pacific. All three of the Buccaneers' losses have come on the road at Power Five conference opponents, dropping a 4-2 decision at Virginia Tech last Sunday and a 5-2 decision at Ole Miss the Sunday prior (Jan. 22). On Friday, Jan. 20, ETSU was swept 7-0 at Kentucky.

The Lady Toppers enter the weekend 4-3 with wins over Bellarmine (4-3), Eastern Kentucky (7-0), Lipscomb (5-2) and Western Illinois (7-0). Last Sunday, WKU was edged 4-3 at home by Western Carolina before topping Western Illinois. The Lady Toppers also fell at the hands of Austin Peay, suffering a 6-1 home loss on Jan. 26. WKU took No. 6 singles against the Governors for its lone point of the match.

Last season, the Bruins were blanked by the Bucs in east Tennessee and fell 6-1 against the Lady Toppers on the road.
