Men's Tennis Welcomes Chattanooga Sunday

Bruins Look to Remain Unbeaten on the Young Season

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Looking to remain undefeated, the Belmont University men's tennis team puts its 3-0 start to the season on the line Sunday as the Bruins host the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga indoors at the Ensworth Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 4:30 p.m.

Live scoring of the match will be available at BelmontBruins.com.

After a 5-2 season-opening victory over in-state NCAA Division II member Lee University, Belmont picked up a pair of wins against ASUN Conference foes last weekend. The Bruins swept former Ohio Valley Conference adversary Austin Peay last Saturday on the road in Evansville, Indiana, before claiming their fifth-straight triumph in the Battle of the Boulevard last Sunday against nearby rival Lipscomb.

Securing the doubles point against the Bisons, Belmont took the top four singles matches en route to a convincing 6-1 win.

After dominant performances in the two victories last weekend, graduate student Marko Ilic and junior Riccardo Trione swept the Horizon League's weekly honors. Ilic was tabbed Horizon League Singles Player of the Week, while Ilic and Trione were named Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week. Recording two points for the Bruins at the top singles position last weekend, Ilic won both of his No. 1 singles matches in straight sets. The tandem of Ilic and Trione remained perfect on the season at the No. 1 doubles spot, giving up only three combined games across the two matches.

Unable to upend the Mocs in its prior three meetings with Chattanooga, Belmont prevailed in a 4-3 road affair nearly one year ago to the day last Feb. 6. Despite sweeping doubles, the Bruins split the six singles matches and won the bottom three positions in third sets to clinch the tightly-contested match.

The Mocs make the approximately two-hour trek northwest on I-24 touting a 3-1 record. On a three-match win streak, Chattanooga most recently earned a 5-2 victory at Lipscomb Friday evening in Nashville.

Belmont will have a week off from match action before hosting UNC Asheville next Sunday morning at the Ensworth Tennis Center. In two weeks, the Bruins take on in-town Southeastern Conference mainstay Vanderbilt down the road.
