NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Belmont University baseball team fell to No. 6 Vanderbilt on Tuesday night, 15-6, at First Horizon Park.Â
Belmont (7-11) recorded 12 hits on the night, the most allowed by Vanderbilt since the Commodores' season opener against nationally-ranked TCU, but came away from promising situations with not enough runs to keep up with their SEC opponent.Â
No. 6 Vanderbilt (13-5) jumped ahead with a four-run first inning and tallied multiple runs in five different frames on the way to the victory, their fourth straight in the series.Â
Sam Kirkpatrick finished 3-for-6 with two runs and a double, Jack Rando ended his night 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, two RBIs, and a walk, Blake Barton went 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Drew Lowry tallied three RBIs.Â
Belmont drew seven walks to go along with their 12 hits, but left 14 men on base, going 1-for-19 with runners in scoring position.Â
Belmont responded to Vanderbilt's four-spot in the first inning with two runs of their own, with Lowry sending a single to left field that scored both Rando and Kirkpatrick.Â
Vanderbilt added two more runs in the third inning to make it 6-2, but the Bruins threatened in the home third inning, with Mason Landers walking, Barton singling, and Brodey Heaton walking to load the bases with nobody out.Â
However, three straight Bruins were retired to end the inning, with no runs coming across.Â
Vanderbilt would go on to scratch another run across in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth, bringing the score to 9-2.Â
Belmont would not go down quietly, with Jack Rando hammering a ball off the left field foul pole for his second home run of the season, a solo blast to lead off the seventh inning.Â
Directly after Rando's home run, Belmont again loaded the bases with nobody out in the seventh inning.Â
Two grounders put in play by Lowry and Max Blessinger drove in two more runs, getting Belmont closer at 9-5 entering the eighth inning. Â
Vanderbilt plated three more runs in the eighth, getting a two-run homer that took advantage of a Belmont fielding error for an additional run to make it 12-5.Â
An RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the eighth inning from Rando that scored Kirkpatrick all the way from first base would close the door on Belmont's runs.Â
Joe Ruzicka (L, 0-2) got the start on the mound for the Bruins, with Cade Granzow, Simon Tesh, Jake Timbes, and Dalton Wasson seeing time out of the bullpen.Â
