Matt Beaty Traded to San Francisco Giants And Selected to Opening Day Roster

SAN FRANCISCO – Former Belmont University baseball standout Matt Beaty (2012-15) was acquired by the San Francisco Giants from the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. 

Beaty was subsequently selected to the Giants' 26-man Opening Day roster ahead of their first game against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Beaty had signed a minor league deal with the Royals this past offseason and participated with the big league team in spring training, but was not selected to Kansas City's Opening Day roster. 

Beaty has a .249/.320/.405 career MLB triple-slash with 18 home runs in 603 plate appearances over the past four seasons. 

At Belmont, Beaty started his collegiate career by earning a spot on the All-Atlantic Sun Freshman Team while helping the Bruins to its second NCAA Regional Appearance in program history in 2012. Holding a .352 batting average as a junior in 2014, Beaty capped off his collegiate career with All-OVC First Team honors as a senior in 2015.   

His .382 batting average with 12 home runs and 76 RBIs in 2015 also earned him a spot on the Second Team for the NCBWA and Louisville Slugger All-American teams, collecting ABCA All-South Region Second Team honors in the process. Beaty currently holds top-10 spots in hits, doubles, triples, home runs, at-bats, RBIs and walks in the Belmont Baseball career record book. 

Beaty played for the San Diego Padres in 2022, appearing in 20 games while splitting time with the Padres Triple-A affiliate, the El Paso Chihuahuas, where he played in 35 games while hitting .270 with two home runs.  

The left-handed infielder and outfielder spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2019-2021, playing in 240 games, including 15 postseason games, and helped the Dodgers win the 2020 World Series over the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-2.  

The Royals initially drafted Beaty out of Dresden High School in the 48th round of the 2011 MLB Draft, but the native of Dresden, Tennessee, chose to attend Belmont instead, going on to become one of the most decorated players in program history.  

After being selected by the Dodgers in the 12th round and 372nd overall in the 2015 MLB Draft, Beaty became an MiLB.com Organization All-Star and earned the Texas League Player of the Year as a member of the Tulsa Drillers.   

Following his move to the Triple-A level with the Oklahoma City Dodgers, Beaty became the first Belmont player to play in a Major League Baseball game since Dwight Bernard in 1978 when he made his Major League debut on April 30, 2019. Beaty finished his rookie season with a .265 batting average, adding nine home runs and 46 RBIs to help the Dodgers to the National League West Division Title.   

Beaty made the 25-man postseason roster that year, seeing action in all but one game in the National League Division Series against the eventual World Series champion Washington Nationals.
