NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After having its four-match winning streak snapped over the weekend, the Belmont University women's tennis team looks to bounce back with a midweek Missouri Valley Conference match at Murray State Wednesday afternoon. The Bruins (7-11, 4-1 MVC) take on the host Racers (10-8, 4-2 MVC) at 1 p.m. from the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts in Murray, Kentucky.
Â
The match was originally scheduled for Sunday, March 26 but had to be postponed due to travel issues.
Â
Beginning its final road stretch of the regular season, Belmont sits just a half match ahead of Murray State in the MVC standings. The Bruins are half a match behind Drake, who defeated Belmont 4-2 this past Saturday, and two matches behind conference leader Illinois State, who is a perfect 7-0 in MVC play.
Â
Last Friday, the Bruins earned their second sweep in the Valley with a 7-0 rout of visiting Northern Iowa at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex. Despite Belmont's setback against the Bulldogs, both graduate student
Meredith Roberts at No. 4 singles and senior
Taylor Trondson at the sixth spot were victorious in their senior day matches.
Â
The Ukrainian duo of freshman
Mariia Hlahola and sophomore
Anastasiya Zholdakova remain ranked nationally, the tandem checking in at No. 80 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) doubles rankings.
Â
On April 1 last year, the Bruins defeated the Racers 4-3 in Ohio Valley Conference action in Nashville. After securing the doubles point, Belmont won three of the top four singles matches, including a straight-set victory by Zholdakova at the fourth position.
Â
Murray State enters Wednesday coming off back-to-back wins last week at Missouri State (6-1) and versus Northern Iowa (5-2) at home. The Racers' two losses in league play came on the road at Illinois State (7-0) and the University of Illinois Chicago (5-2).
Â
Owning a 7-1 record at home, Murray State was picked fifth in the MVC's preseason predicted order of finish.
Â
Up Next
The Bruins wrap up the regular season this weekend in Illinois, taking on the MVC-leading Redbirds Saturday afternoon in Normal before heading to Peoria Sunday for a matchup with Bradley.
