Baseball Suffers 2-1 Loss to Indiana State on Friday

Bruins Come Up Short in Pitchers' Duel at E.S. Rose Park

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- In a duel between two of the top starting pitchers in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Belmont University baseball team fell, 2-1, on Friday to Indiana State at E.S. Rose Park.

Indiana State's Matt Jachec (W, 4-2) and Belmont's Andy Bean (L, 3-5) battled throughout the evening on Friday, combining to allow just one earned run. However, taking advantage of a Belmont error to score the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, it was the Sycamores who were able to squeak out a one-run victory.

The loss marks the third in Belmont's last four defeats that have come by one run.

Two of the three runs in the game were unearned, with both teams combining for three errors.

Indiana State (20-12, 9-1 MVC), who came in ranked eighth in the country in fielding percentage, tallied two fielding miscues, with one leading directly to the only Belmont run in the fourth inning.

Jachec went seven innings on the mound for the Sycamores, allowing no earned runs on seven hits while striking out 11 Bruins with one walk.

Bean matched him pitch-for-pitch, tossing 7 2/3 innings with only one earned run, a solo home run in the third inning. The left-hander recorded five strikeouts and walked only one batter, scattering just four hits.

Jett Thielke gave Belmont (19-16, 5-5 MVC) a chance in the ninth inning, coming on with two outs and a runner on third in the eighth before retiring the threat and then striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Brodey Heaton singled with two outs in the ninth inning to put the tying run on base, but a flyout ended the game.

Belmont out-hit Indiana State, 8-4, but struck out 12 times and left five men on base.

Mason Landers finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and Max Blessinger ended his night 2-for-3 with a stolen base.
