Nashville, Tenn — Belmont's track and field team gave back to the Edgehill community on Tuesday afternoon by hosting "Track and Field Day" at nearby Carter Lawrence Elementary. Partnering with students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, Belmont student-athletes managed six activity stations related to track and field during the event.Â
The Bruins provided each student with the opportunity to learn the basics of sprints, hurdles, plyometrics, shot put, long jump and the javelin throw in a fun-filled experience. Â
"We love being able to engage with kids in the community by showing them different sports and different things they can do to stay active," Sade Alalade said. "I love to being able to see the children have fun and just enjoying track for the pure fun of it and overall, this is a step to encourage them in their future journeys."Â
"Some kids maybe they've never heard a track before or maybe they've never seen it. This gave us a chance to show them all the different events, whether it's throwing, running, jumping, you know, teaching them how to do it," graduate assistant Meaghan Rogers said.Â
The students navigated from each station every 10 minutes, expressing enthusiasm as they tried out everything, listening to kind instructions from the Bruins.Â
"Being such a young age, I think it was a really special opportunity to get to work with them," Rogers said. "At that age, kids tend to be trying a lot of different sports and trying different hobbies. Having our track team here gave us the chance to come kind and show what track is all about."Â
Spearheading the event, Rogers helped motivate and direct the excited students. By experimenting with the basics of the sport in every activity, each student learned something new.Â
"I think aside from the sport of track and field, this day was about encouraging the kids to try new things and to set their mind to anything that they want and to really think without any limitations," Rogers added.Â
