Softball Posts Seventh Shutout of the Season

Bruins Clinch Series Win on 7-0 Victory

Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. -- Belmont University Softball defeated the University of Illinois Chicago 4-0 in the second matchup of the weekend to secure the series victory.

On the day the Bruins produced seven runs on nine hits with one error. Emma Summers pitched her fifth complete game of the season for her seventh win. Summers posted 8 strikeouts for the seventh shutout of the season for the Bruins.

How it Happened
Emma Barnes, leadoff hitter, started the Bruins off with a single dropping in right field. Kristen Green singled, on her move to second she was caught but Barnes still advanced to third. Emily Cockrill was hit by a pitch to take first. Cockrill, looking to steal second the Flames catcher had a throwing error reaching center field, Barnes capitalized to put the Bruins on the board.

Belmont was tactical around the bases today, a single from Hughes turned into a run on a fielder's choice on Abi Ledbetter's at bat. Belmont topped the first with 2 runs to set the tone.

Two on in the second, Kristen Green sent out a hit to the Flames' shortstop, an error on the play scored Ensio for the third run of the day. Green stole second on the throw Barnes stole home. The Bruins kept the 4-0 lead for the next four innings.

Catcher Audrey Lyle posted an impressive diving catch on a foul ball in the fourth to continue the Bruins momentum.

Belmont found some more steam in the seventh to add an additional three runs to their lead. Blume posted her 20th RBI on the season on a 2 RBI single to put the Bruins up 6-0. Audrey Lyle recorded her first hit of the season for an RBI single to finalize the scoring for the day.

Up Next: The Bruins are looking for their first sweep of the season. First pitch is set for Saturday, March 7 at 12 p.m. CT.
