Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. -- Belmont University Softball swept their first conference series of the season with a final win of 0-0 against the University of Chicago Illinois.
How it Happened
Belmont loaded the bases in the first on singles from Emily Cockrill and Kristen Green, Abi Ledbetter walked. A double play from the Flames ended the Bruins stride in the first.
The Flames broke into the run column first on the day for their first lead of the series. Bottom of the first a ground out to Nicole Hughes brought home Maica Ingles who singled earlier in the inning.
Belmont took the lead back from the Flames on a two RBI single from Emily Cockrill to score Emma Barnes and Green. Brenna Blume posted an RBI double to advance the Bruins lead 3-1. Abi Ledbetter was called out at the plate on a close throw from the Flames center fielder.
Green threw off the Flames defense by stealing second, giving Baie Ensio the opportunity to steal home and add another run for the Bruins.
Ellie Giles earned the start in the circle on the day. In the midst of the game Giles retired 11 straight Flames hitters for the Bruins.
The Bruins tacked on five insurance runs in the sixth on a RBI single from Nicole Hughes and a two RBI double from Ledbetter. Brenna Blume and Kaley Varner wanted to get in on the fun. A double from Blume and single from Varner each added an RBI for the Bruins. Belmont produced five runs on four hits through nine hitters in the sixth, 9-1.
The Flames added their second run of the day on an RBI single from Carlee Jo Clark.
On the day the Bruins produced nine runs on 15 hits with one error. Ellie Giles earned her third win of the season in her third complete game. On the day Giles earned one strikeout and allowed five hits.
