NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont women's soccer hosted Cleveland State for the first all-time matchup between the teams. Belmont scored the first goal of the match, but two unanswered goals by the Vikings made the difference, as Cleveland State won, 2-1.
The Bruins picked up steam offensively in the opening minutes of the match. Their pressure in Cleveland State territory led to several early opportunities for the Bruins. Belmont capitalized on one-of-four corner kick opportunities in the half, to grab the early lead.
Maci Pekmezian scored her first goal of the match in the 12th minute, assisted by
Avery Nowak.
Belmont's 1-0 lead was short lived, and Cleveland State answered in the 21
st minute. Katherine Ramicone found Mayra Sesmas for her second goal of the season.
Both teams ended the half with four shots, in a 1-1 match.
Second half play with both teams matching each other's play. Viking forward Erica Leinweber capitalized on a Belmont turnover, and took it herself to the goal for her second of the year. The game winning goal for the Vikings made it 2-1, after the 60
th minute.
Belmont had chances down the stretch to tie the match, but couldn't deliver the necessary attack to avoid a loss. The final score of the match was 2-1, in favor of Cleveland State.
Belmont has a quick turnaround with a road match at Western Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 3. Kickoff from the WKU Soccer Complex is slated for 1 p.m. While the match won't be broadcasted, fans can follow along with live stats and in-game social media updates.
