NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Volleyball Program (5-7) swept Jackson State (4-6) to start the day. The Bruins later faced a cross-town match-up with Tennessee State (0-10). In their final match of the weekend, the Bruins topped the Tigers 3-1.
Belmont vs JSU
The Bruins started off hot.
Ally Peterson rattled off four kills to give Belmont a 5-0 lead to start set one. Belmont's front court continued to apply pressure on the JSU defense the rest of the set. The Bruins went on anther 5-0 midway through the set backed by two kills apiece from
Kristen Clemons and
Brooke Gilleland. The team continued to control the tempo and took a commanding 20-7 lead late in the set. Clemons put another one away to take the set for the Bruins at 25-16.
Belmont got off to another strong start in set two. The Bruins went on a 4-0 run to take an early 8-5 lead. A pair of Bruin errors let the Tigers back in the set at 17-15. JSU later went on a 4-0 run to even the score at 21. Back-to-back kills from
Ally Peterson and
Brenna Kauffeld helped Belmont reclaim the lead. The Bruins went on to take the set 25-23.
Set three started no different than the first two. The Bruins came out swinging and jumped to a 7-1 lead.
Elizabeth Godfrey recorded three straight aces to spark another 5-0 for Belmont midway through the set. Belmont continued to control the set and claimed set three and the match 25-18.
Belmont vs TSU
Belmont got off to a slow start in set one. The Bruins quickly found themselves down 11-17 after two unforced errors. With a 4-0 run, Belmont began working their way back in the set and tied it up at 18. The rest of the set was a back-and-forth battle where TSU edged Belmont out in a close finish at 24-26.
The second set was another battle for the Bruins. Both teams traded big swings and points throughout the beginning. Belmont put together a couple of late runs behind two kills from
Laura Shoopman and
Emily Warmenhoven. The Bruins regained the lead at 19-17 and never looked back. With a kill from Clemons, Belmont took set two 25-22.
The Bruins got off to a hot start in set three. With a pair of aces from Godfrey, Belmont raced to an early 6-0 lead. Belmont continued their strong start and controlled the rest of the set. Gilleland and Shoopman teamed up for two kills to spark a 4-0 run for the Bruins late in the set. TSU made a late attempt to come back with a 3-0 run to cut the Bruins lead to 23-18. Clemons ended the run from the Tigers and Belmont went on to win the third 25-19.
Set four started with another back-and-forth battle. TSU eventually went on a 5-0 run to take the lead 8-11 midway through the set. The Tigers continued to lead the Bruins until
Kamryn Olson put one away to start a 5-0 run for Belmont and reclaim the lead at 23-20. Kauffeld came up with a big kill to finish the set and match for the Bruins 25-22.
What's Bruin
- Kauffeld and Willis were named to the Belmont/TSU Tournament All-Tournament Team.
- Kauffeld recorded 36 kills with a .217 hitting percentage and 7 blocks.
- Willis added 23 kills and 12 blocks for the Bruins.
- Rachel McBride led the Bruin defense with 52 digs.
- Olson tallied 116 assists.
