Volleyball Sweeps Indiana State to Open Conference Play

Bruins Swept the Sycamores in MVC Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Volleyball Program (7-8) opened conference play with a sweep over Indiana State (2-9). The Bruins were able to start off strong in their second season with the Missouri Valley Conference.

How it Happened

Belmont got off to a strong start in set one. Emily Warmenhoven had the hot hand to get things going for the Bruins. The outside tallied three quick kills to help the Bruins take a 13-6 lead midway through the first. Belmont continued to push the tempo and remained in control the rest of the set. Brenna Kauffeld and Sydney Willis contributed to Belmont's dominance with three and two kills apiece. The Bruins cruised to a 25-17 set one win.

Set two was a game of runs to start. The Sycamores were able to put together a 3-0 run to erase the Bruins' lead to one at 8-7. It wasn't long until the Bruins got hot again and put together several runs of their own. Warmenhoven stepped up for Belmont again with three kills to help push the Bruins to a 16-10 lead. After taking a commanding lead, it was all Belmont the rest of the way. Willis and Missy Sterkel came up with a huge block to finish the set 25-15.

The Bruins got off to a slow start in set three. A few Bruin errors and strong attacks from the ISU offense quickly left Belmont down 9-13. Back-to-back kills from Ally Peterson brought the Bruins back in it at 14-16. The Sycamore front court didn't stop swinging though. ISU continued to apply pressure on Belmont's defense to keep the lead at 17-21. The Bruins would then go on a huge 6-0 run to reclaim the lead at 23-21. The run was sparked by three straight kills from Kauffeld, Peterson and Willis. Their late run allowed the Bruins to gain momentum and finish a close set three on top 25-23.
