Women’s Soccer Blanks Southern Illinois, 3-0

Bruins Notch Second Shutout Victory at Home This Week

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont women's soccer (8-8-2, 5-3-1 MVC) hosted Southern Illinois (6-5-5, 2-3-3 MVC) in the final regular season home match at E.S. Rose Park. Belmont's offense remained hot as the Bruins netted three goals against one of the MVC's top defenses. Belmont picked up their eighth win of the season and fifth in MVC play, 3-0.
 
Scoring Action
 
Laken Whittington put Belmont on the board in the 15th minute.  Whittington played a ball from Anna Samuel from 20 yards out. The crossing shot bounced off the right post and gave Belmont an early 1-0 lead. Whittington's goal was the first of her career.
 
 Belmont scored early in the second half thanks to Reagan Ross. Kaitlyn Elliott led Ross inside the 18-yard box from just beyond midfield. Ross avoided a sliding goalkeeper and found the open goal. The goal in the 54th minute extended Belmont's lead to 2-0.
 
 The Bruins scored one more time in the 68th minute. Samuel slipped a beautiful ball to a crossing Olivia Walker into the arc. Walker netted her first career goal off a chip shot to the right side of the goal. Belmont put the match out of reach of SIU, up 3-0.

  • The Bruins have scored seven goals in their last two matches. The last time Belmont scored three or more goals in consecutive matches was in 2019.
  • Laken Whittington and Olivia Walker each scored their first career goal.

  • Sydney Jones made seven saves and recorded her sixth shutout of the season; her fifth in MVC play.
  • Anna Samuel recorded a career-high two assists.
