Men's Tennis Sends Two Pairs into Doubles Finals at the CCB Collegiate Invitational

Bruins Go 4-0 in Doubles Action Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On the second day of the CCB Collegiate Invitational at The Country Club of Birmingham in Alabama, the Belmont University men's tennis team went a perfect 4-0 in doubles play to send two tandems into finals Sunday morning. The Bruins also picked up a pair of singles match wins with junior Sabi Roi and freshman Charlie Robin collecting triumphs.

"Doubles was great today as a whole," commented head coach Jeff Cero. "I thought we played big points very well and the energy was great. Hopefully, we can continue it tomorrow and show up in both finals."

The duo of junior Esunge Ndumbe and Robin defeated South Alabama's Harold von Raemdock and Juan Accossatto 6-3 in their opening round match before getting past Sam Baldwin and Anthony Weingarten of Kennesaw State, 7-5, in the semifinals of the red draw.

In the Bulldog draw, Roi and graduate Niklas von Hellens edged Ben Kiblinger and Martin Schwartzman of tournament host Samford 7-5 before topping Tulane's Asaf Friedler and Charlie Burdell 6-4.

"Sabi and Charlie both fought through some tough conditions and showed good resiliency in more difficult matches," said coach Cero. "Tomorrow will be no different playing the fourth singles match in three days. I believe the guys can tackle the challenge well and finish our weekend strong."

Both Roi and Robin were victorious in third-set 10-point super tiebreakers. After dropping the first set 6-2 against Izan Orgiles of North Alabama in the consolation bracket of the red draw, Roi took the second set 6-4. He then prevailed in the decisive tiebreaker, 11-9.

Also in the consolation bracket of the red draw, Robin outlasted South Alabama's Victor Frumholz. Robin won the tiebreak 10-6 after securing the first set, 6-3, but faltering in the second, 6-1.

Ndumbe and Robin will face Nazar Fedoryshyn and Alberto Altur of North Alabama in the red doubles draw final Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

In the Bulldog doubles draw final Sunday morning, Roi and von Hellens will take on the Lions' Samuel Balfour and Lachlan Brain.

Sunday's action will also include one more round of singles following the doubles finals.
