MURRAY, Ky – The Belmont University Volleyball Program (7-10, 2-3 MVC) fell in five sets to Murray State (9-5, 4-1 MVC) on Tuesday.
How it Happened
Lucy Kay and
Brenna Kauffeld got the Bruins going with three kills apiece to start the first set. The Bruins quickly took an 11-8 lead. Another kill from Kay sparked a late 5-0 run for Belmont to take the first 25-19.
It was all Belmont in the second set. The Bruins put together another 5-0 run featuring an ace from
Elizabeth Godfrey to jump out to a 10-2 lead. A kill from
Brooke Gilleland extended Belmont's lead at 17-6.
Emily Warmenhoven and Kay teamed up for a huge block down the stretch as the Bruins secured a 25-14 set two win.
Murray State took back the momentum in set three. Another kill from Kauffeld brought Belmont within two at 14-16. The Racers went on a 6-0 run to take control at 14-22. Murray State went on to claim the third 16-25.
Set four was a close battle. Gilleland and Kay added a pair of kills to give the Bruins a 14-11 lead midway through the set. The Racers would go on another run to take back the lead. A big swing from Kauffeld later evened the score at 20 all. Murray State eventually edged out Belmont 24-26 to force a deciding fifth set.
The Racers jumped out ahead early in the fifth. A kill from Kay brought the Bruins within one at 5-6. Murray State continued to make big plays and take the fifth set and match 7-15.
