NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Volleyball Program (10-18, 5-11 MVC) fell in four sets to Illinois State (14-15, 9-7 MVC) Friday night.
How it Happened
Belmont and Illinois state continued to trade points in the beginning of set one. A kill from
Lucy Kay evened the score at 14 all. The Bruins began to pull away as
Brenna Kauffeld put the ball down to extend the lead at 20-17. Belmont continued to play an aggressive offense to take the first set 25-18.
The Bruins got off to a slow start in the second.
Mialee Dabbelt added a kill to bring Belmont within two at 10-12. The Bruins eventually found themselves down 18-23 late in the set. Another kill from Dabbelt sparked a 6-1 run for Belmont to tie it up at 24-24 to force extra points. Despite the impressive come back, Illinois State would claim a close set two 26-28.
Belmont hung close to begin set three. A kill from
Alivia Keegan kept the score even at six all. Illinois State then gained control and would go on to take the third 11-25.
Gilleland gave the Bruins an early 6-4 lead in the fourth off a kill. The Redbirds would quickly come back and lead midway through the set. The Bruins didn't back down and made a run to tie the set at 19-19. Dabbelt recorded another kill to keep Belmont within one at 21-22. Illinois State eventually edged out the Bruins to take set four and the match 21-25.
