Baseball Takes Series Finale Against Valparaiso

Bruins Smash 17 Hits in 15-8 Win Over Beacons

VALPARAISO, Ind. - - Belmont (19-17, 7-5 MVC) and Valparaiso (11-22, 3-9 MVC) capped off the weekend series at Emory G. Bauer Field on Sunday afternoon. Belmont's huge fifth inning and continuous run support lifted the Bruins past Valpo, 15-8.

  • Belmont's 17 hits mark their fifth consecutive game with ten or more hits. Their Sunday hit total is the second-most in a game this season, behind the 21-hit performance on March 28 against Murray State.  
  • Sam Slaughter went 3-for-7 with an RBI double and a stolen base.
  • Jack Rando hit an RBI triple.
  • Mason Landers went 3-for-5 with a home run, four RBI, and scored three runs. Landers extended his hit streak to 19 games and has 14 home runs on the season.
  • Brodey Heaton had two RBI.
  • Jeff Clarke hit a solo home run. Clarke has hit three home runs in the last two games.
  • Pete Daniel tied a season-high three-hit performance.
  • Blake Barton went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two stolen bases.
  • Landon Godsey went 2-for-5 with a double.
  • Belmont had eight extra-base hits. Five different Bruins doubled: Slaughter, Landers, Barton, Daniel, and Godsey.
  • The Bruins improved to 7-5 in the MVC and picked up their 10th road win of the season.
  • Jordan Zuger picked up his first win of the season. Zuger went 2.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowed two unearned runs, and struck out a pair of Beacons. 
The Bruins jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Sam Slaughter singled and stole second base. Jack Rando hit his first triple of the season to left-center field. Mason Landers brought in Rando on a ground ball to the left side. Belmont led 2-0 after the first inning.
 
 Valparaiso scratched across two runs in the home half on a wild pitch and an RBI single from Liam Patton.
 
Belmont tacked on three more runs in the second. Landon Godsey hit a one-out double down the right-field line. Slaughter drove Godsey in on an RBI double. Landers hit an RBI single that scored Kaden Galason. Blake Barton hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Slaughter. Belmont led 5-2 after the top of the second.
 
 Blake Barton hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth to make it a 6-2 ballgame. The Bruins left the bases loaded to end the inning.
 
 The offense exploded for Belmont in the fifth inning. The Bruins had the bases loaded with no outs. Landers drew a bases-loaded walk for the first run of the inning. Barton doubled to left field to score Michael Lareau and Slaughter. Brodey Heaton brought in two more runs on a single to left field. Lareau drew the second bases-loaded walk of the inning. Belmont scored six runs on four hits and took a 12-2 lead to the bottom of the fifth.
 
 Valparaiso scored a pair of runs in the sixth. Brady Renfro reached on a dropped fly ball by Rando. A wild pitch from Jordan Zuger scored another unearned run for the Beacons. After six innings, Belmont led, 12-4.
 
The Beacons scored a run in the seventh inning, after Ryan Maka drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs.
 
Belmont hung a pair of runs on the scoreboard in the eighth. Slaughter reached on a fielder's choice with one out. He stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by catcher Liam Patton. He scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Rando. Landers hit his 14th home run of the season in the next at-bat. Belmont led 14-5.
 
 Jeff Clarke capped off the scoring for Belmont with an opposite-field solo home run. His third home run in the last two games made it a 15-5 Belmont lead.
 
 Valpo made it interesting in the ninth. A pair of home runs from Kyle Schmack and Carson Husmann brought in three runs. The Beacons failed to mount a comeback. Belmont won the rubber match, 15-8.  
 
Belmont returns to action on Tuesday, April 16, against North Alabama at E.S. Rose Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT. Fans can tune into the game on ESPN+, iHeartRadio, or with live stats.
