INDIANAPOLIS – For their dedication and hard work both in the classroom and on the court, Belmont University men's tennis'
Tomas Luis and
Ian Cruz have been chosen for Horizon League All-Academic honors. Luis has been named to the 2024 Valeo Horizon League Men's Tennis All-Academic Team, while Cruz has earned Horizon Leage All-Academic honorable mention recognition.
Â
Both senior business administration majors, Luis (Tavira, Portugal) and Cruz (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) have maintained cumulative grade point averages above 3.80 for their collegiate careers while flourishing on the tennis court. The two were College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District
® honorees, Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes and Horizon League Academic Honor Roll members last year.
Â
With 73 career singles victories, Luis is only one match shy of breaking the program's all-time singles wins record and has been impressive at the No. 2 spot this spring. Owning a 13-3 record at No. 2 singles, Luis has twice been named Horizon League Singles Player of the week this season.
Â
Leading the Bruins in both singles (20) and doubles (12) victories this year, Cruz has been just as impressive as Luis at No. 3 singles. With a 13-3 record at the position in the singles lineup, Cruz is a perfect 17-0 in conference singles matches for his career.
Â
The 2022 Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, Cruz was an All-Horizon League Second Team selection last spring along with Luis.
Â
The Horizon Leage Men's and Women's Tennis All-Academic Teams are voted upon by the league's faculty athletics representatives (FARs).
Â
To be eligible for Horizon League All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits, and participate in 50 percent of the team's overall contests. Horizon League All-Academic honorable mention is awarded to student-athletes who received at least 25 percent of votes but did not make the all-academic team.
