Baseball Drops Series Opener to Southern Illinois

Will Pryor Strikes Out 10 in Six Innings

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont (20-18, 7-6 MVC) and Southern Illinois (22-16, 6-7 MVC) opened their three-game series Friday evening at E.S. Rose Park. A two-run top of the ninth from SIU was the difference in the series opener. The Bruins fell 7-6 to the Salukis.

  • Will Pryor notched 10 strikeouts in his six-inning start. Pryor allowed six hits and four earned runs with 110 pitches thrown. The 10 strikeouts were the most by Pryor since his career-high 11 strikeouts on March 1st against Little Rock.
  • Jack Rando went 3-for-5 with three runs.
  • Brodey Heaton drove in two runs and reached base three times.
  • Mason Landers, Blake Barton, Jeff Clarke and Landon Godsey each recorded an RBI.
Belmont scored the first runs of the game in the first inning. An error on a fielder's choice from Mason Landers allowed Jack Rando to reach second base and Sam Slaughter to score. Brodey Heaton followed with an RBI single up the middle. Belmont led 2-0 after the first inning.
 
SIU tied the game on a solo home run and RBI double in the second inning. The Salukis took the lead in the third on a two-out solo home run.
 
Belmont scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the third. Blake Barton drove in Rando on an RBI double down the left-field line. Landers moved up to third on the play. He scored in the next at-bat on a ground ball up the middle from Heaton. Godsey's two-out RBI single to right field scored Barton. Belmont led 5-3 after three innings of play.
 
 The Salukis made it a one-run ballgame in the fifth inning on an RBI double. Will Pryor left the bases loaded and preserved Belmont's lead. Pryor went 1-2-3- on SIU in the sixth inning. He finished the game with 110 pitches thrown in six innings of work. He recorded 10 strikeouts: the second most thrown in a start this season.
 
 SIU tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh inning. Belmont regained the lead in the bottom of the inning. Jeff Clarke hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Rando. Landers was thrown out at third for the final out of the inning.
 
The Salukis' last at-bats won them the game. Down to their last strike, Trey Cutchen hit a double down the left-field line to score two runs. Belmont went quietly in the bottom of the ninth. SIU won game one of the series, 7-6.
 
Belmont and SIU return to action on Saturday, April 20, at E.S. Rose Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and iHeartRadio.
