Baseball Suffers Loss to Southern Illinois

Bruins Fail to Contain Salukis’ Offense

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont (20-19, 7-7 MVC) and Southern Illinois (23-16, 7-7 MVC) continued their weekend series Saturday afternoon. The Bruins struggled with run production and fell 7-3 to the Salukis.
 
Bruin Bullets SIU scored in the first inning. Following a pair of infield singles, the Salukis scored on a two-out error.
 
Belmont responded in the second inning. Blake Barton led off the inning with his first triple of the year. Brodey Heaton brought Barton home on a ground ball to the right side. The Bruins tied the game 1-1 in the second.


 
The Salukis answered in the third inning on a two-out RBI single from Hesston Gray. The Salukis carried a 2-1 until the fourth inning.
 
Pete Daniel brought in his first RBI of the afternoon to tie the game. Heaton walked with one out. Jeff Clarke and Landon Godsey singled to load the bases. Daniel hit a fly ball to center field that scored Heaton from third. The Bruins tied the game at 2-2.


 
SIU put two runs on the board in the fifth inning on one hit. They added their fifth run of the game in the sixth inning. Daniel doubled to right field with one out and scored Heaton. Belmont cut the deficit to 5-3.


 
The Bruins couldn't keep the Salukis off the board. SIU scored on a bases-loaded balk in the seventh inning. Belmont had an opportunity to make a difference in the bottom of the eight. The Bruins had runners on first and second with two outs. Pinch-hitter Cade Rogers struck out to end the inning.
 
SIU tacked on a solo home run from Jordan Bach in the ninth inning. Belmont went quietly in the bottom half. SIU secured the series win with a 7-3 victory.
 
Belmont and SIU close out the weekend series Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at E.S. Rose Park. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and iHeartRadio.
