NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont (20-20, 7-8 MVC) and Southern Illinois (24-16, 8-7 MVC) wrapped up their weekend series Sunday afternoon. The Salukis' early scoring and stellar pitching from Aidan Foeller were the difference in the game. The Salukis swept the Bruins with Sunday's 11-1 result.
Bruin Bullets
SIU scored two runs on three hits in the first inning. Trey Cutchen drove in both runs on a two-out RBI single to center field. Belmont had an opportunity to get on the board in the home half but left two runners on base.
The Salukis' five-run third inning put Belmont in a deep hole. A pair of walks came in to score on a double and ground ball up the middle. Justin Kuess hit a two-run home run to right field. SIU led 7-0 after the third.
SIU scored two more runs in the eighth inning to make it a 9-0 ball game.
Jett Thielke closed out the inning and stranded two runners on base.
Belmont had runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning with one out. The Bruins struck out back-to-back to end the inning. SIU came back in the ninth with another two-spot to increase their lead to 11-0.
Belmont scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Max Blessinger led off with a double down the left-field line. Pinch hitter
Max Jones delivered an RBI single to right field with two outs. Belmont failed to score again and lost 11-1.
Belmont returns to action on Tuesday, April 23 against Southern Indiana. First pitch from the USI Baseball Field is scheduled for 6 p.m. Fans can tune into the action on iHeartRadio or follow along with live stats.
