CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont (22-26) traveled to Austin Peay (31-17) on Tuesday afternoon for some midweek action. It was a game defined by offense as the teams combined for 28 runs. After trailing by 16-3 after the third inning, Belmont scored nine unanswered runs but fell to the Governors 16-12.
Bruin Bullets
- Brodey Heaton went 3-for-6 with RBIs and became Belmont's all-time leader in career RBIS with 214. Heaton broke the previous mark held by Derek Wiley ('09) with 212 in the fourth inning on a three-run home run. Heaton extends his hit streak to nine games.
- Michael Lareau and Pete Daniel hit back-to-back solo home runs in the fourth inning. Pete Daniel finished the game with two hits and runs.
- Jack Rando doubled twice and scored three times.
- Sam Slaughter went 2-for-6 and stole two bases.
- Max Jones delivered a pinch-hit double in the sixth inning that scored two runs.
- Mason Landers drove in two runs on a double in the seventh.
Belmont jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Sam Slaughter singled on the first pitch of the game. Following a walk to
Jack Rando and Landers was hit by a pitch,
Brodey Heaton singled to left field.
Blake Barton drew a bases-loaded walk.
Jeff Clarke hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Belmont's third run of the inning.
Austin Peay scored seven runs on four hits in the second inning. The Governors were poised to explode offensively with the bases loaded and no outs. The inning was highlighted by two home runs and two doubles. Austin Peay led 7-3 after the inning.
The Governors continued to dominate in the third inning. Austin Peay scored nine runs on six hits. Three home runs, including a grand slam, were the highlights of the inning. Austin Peay led 16-3.
The Bruins cut into the deficit in the fourth inning.
Michael Lareau and
Pete Daniel hit back-to-back solo home runs with one out. Rando doubled and Landers walked to set the table for
Brodey Heaton. Heaton hit his 13
th home run of the season to left-center field and became Belmont's new leader in career RBIs. Belmont scored five runs on four hits and trailed 16-8.
Belmont added a pair of runs on the scoreboard in the sixth. Pinch hitter
Max Jones hit a two-out double to left-center field that brought in Barton and Landers. Belmont chipped away at the Governor's lead, 16-10.
Belmont's final runs came in the seventh inning.
Mason Landers doubled to left-center field and scored Rando and Daniel. Belmont's nine unanswered runs were not enough to overcome the early deficit. Austin Peay won the game 16-12.
