NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Entering his first full academic year leading the Belmont University men's tennis program, head coach
Jeff Cero has announced six newcomers to the team. Featuring four transfers and a pair of freshmen, the six additions will arrive on campus for the upcoming fall semester.
Â
Diego Britt-Alvarez, Eli Mizerski, Esunge Ndumbe, Charlie Robin, Sabi Roi and Morgan Woodson join the Bruins looking to continue Belmont's championship success. Coach Cero's first signees at Belmont are a unique group who come from various backgrounds and include NCAA Division II and Division III nationally-ranked players and a NAIA All-American.
Â
A transfer from crosstown Horizon League foe Tennessee State, Britt-Alvarez makes the move to Belmont Boulevard as a graduate student. Hailing from Naples, Florida (Lely HS), Britt-Alvarez was a top-150 ranked junior in the Sunshine State and was a Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state semifinalist before playing for the Tigers the last four years. This past spring, Britt-Alvarez went 10-6 at the No. 4 singles spot for Tennessee State and ended the season at No. 1 doubles. He also helped lead the Tigers to a HBCU national championship as a senior last fall.
"From the minute I began speaking with Diego it's easy to see why we would want him," commented coach Cero. "He brings passion, hard work and a team-first attitude to his game that is rare to college tennis. He will bring a lot to a younger group and, no doubt, do some damage to finish his college career. I'm really looking forward to working with him."
Â
Following two seasons at coach Cero's previous school, George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon, Mizerski joins the Bruins as a junior. The Warsaw, Poland (LXXV LO im. Jana III Sobieskiego), native ended his sophomore year ranked No. 36 in the nation in Division III and reached the round of 16 at the NCAA Individual Championships. Named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American in singles, Mizerski won the ITA Northwest Regional Championship last fall. George Fox's No. 1 player led the Bruins to consecutive undefeated conference seasons and back-to-back conference regular season and tournament championships. Mizerski earned Northwest Conference Player of the Year honors as a sophomore at George Fox after being tabbed 2023 Northwest Conference Rookie of the Year.
"Eli coming to Belmont is very meaningful to me given the fact that we were together at George Fox prior to Belmont," said coach Cero. "I'm so excited for what he will bring to our team, for him to take his game to the next level, and his intangibles as a teammate and brother to the guys he plays with."
Â
The 2024 ITA Most Improved Player Award recipient for Division II, Ndumbe finished his sophomore campaign at Ferris State in Big Rapids, Michigan, ranked No. 25 in the nation. A native of Keller, Texas (Keller HS), Ndumbe garnered All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference First Team honors this past spring. He went 20-7 overall in singles play last year at the top spot and helped lead the Bulldogs to an NCAA Championship appearance after capturing GLIAC regular season and tournament championships.
"I am thrilled Esunge has decided to join the Belmont men's tennis program this upcoming fall," spoke coach Cero. "He brings tenacity, passion, persistence and hunger that I believe will be instrumental to his growth here at Belmont. I couldn't be more excited to have him here."
Â
A four-star recruit from Huntsville, Alabama, Robin attended the well-known Saddlebrook Tennis Academy in Wesley Chapel, Florida, where he was named player of the year in 2023. Ranked as the top junior in the state of Alabama in the 16 and under age category, Robin reached a top-five ranking in Alabama in the 18 and under age group and was top-75 in the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Southern district.
"I'm very excited for Charlie to come and be a part of the Belmont family this fall," remarked coach Cero. "Not only does he bring a unique game that has a lot of potential to grow even further, but a great attitude and team-first mentality that is invaluable. I'm looking forward to his bright future here."
Â
Roi, a junior transfer from Tennessee Wesleyan in Athens, Tennessee, ended his sophomore season ranked in the top 30 nationally in the NAIA. A native of Lyon, France, Roi earned All-American honors this past spring after going 11-2 in singles play. He was named All-Appalachian Athletic Conference First Team and helped lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back AAC regular season and conference tournament titles. As a freshman, Roi was selected as AAC Freshman of the Year and helped take Tennessee Wesleyan to its first NAIA National Championship match.
"I'm very excited for Sabi to join the program," commented coach Cero. "He not only brings great experience on the court, but also a love for the game and a desire to train and seek his highest level of play. I'm very excited to see him grow in his time here."
Â
Another four-star recruit, Woodson is a native of Hilton Head, South Carolina (Florida Virtual School), and comes to the Music City by way of Boca Raton, Florida, where he trains at One Tennis Academy. A competitive USTA junior tour player, Woodson reached a career-high national ranking of No. 60 and was consistently ranked in the top 100 nationally. One of the top players in the Palmetto State, Woodson was ranked in the top 25 of the USTA Southern section and is a top-115 recruit by
TennisRecruiting.net.
"We are excited for Morgan to be joining the Belmont family," said coach Cero. "He not only brings great energy, but also the right kind of attitude it takes to be a part of this program. I'm excited to see how he will grow over time here."
Â
The Bruins have claimed the Horizon League South Division title each of their first two years in the league and have won three-straight conference regular season championships. Belmont has won 19 consecutive conference matches dating back to 2021 and posted seven-straight winning seasons.
