Baseball Routs Butler in Sunday Doubleheader

Bruins Score 58 Runs in Four-Game Sweep

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont (8-13) and Butler (6-13) concluded their four-game weekend series Sunday at E.S. Rose Park. After scoring 32 runs Friday, the Bruins scored 26 in today's doubleheader. Belmont won both seven-inning games – game one 9-5 and game two 17-6 – to complete the series sweep over Butler.
 
Game 1 Scoring Action
  • Butler scored in the first inning on an RBI single from Harry Carr.
  • Pete Daniel scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to tie that game, 1-1.
  • The scoring continued for Belmont in the first inning. Blake Barton drove in Ty Allen on a single to right field. Landon Godsey singled through the right side and scored Barton. Nolan Sergeant capped off the inning with an RBI single to right that brought Sprockett home.
  • David Ayers hit a solo home run in the second inning and cut the Butler deficit to 4-2.
  • Barton put Belmont up 5-2 with a solo home run in the third inning. Jake Maddox brought in two more runs on a triple to right-center field. Belmont led 7-3 after three innings.
  • Butler's Danny Barbero homered in the fourth inning.
  • Belmont cashed in on a throwing error with the bases loaded and two outs. The Bruins scored two runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 9-3.
  • Jack Bello hit an RBI single in the seventh inning. Tommy Townsend hit a sacrifice fly. Belmont held off Butler and won game one 9-5.
Game 2 Scoring Action
  • Following a fielding error by Belmont, Butler scored three unearned runs in the third inning.
  • Charlie Davis hit an RBI single in the third inning; Pete Daniel scored Belmont's first run.
  • Landon Godsey hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to bring the Bruins within one run, 3-2. Gardner Lawrence stepped in as a pinch hitter and smashed a three-run home run to right-center field. Lawrence's first home run as a Bruin put Belmont ahead, 5-3.
  • Butler cut the deficit to 5-4 with a sacrifice fly from Jack Moroknek in the fifth inning.
  • Belmont scored nine runs on eight hits and an error in the fifth inning. Nolan Sergeant scored Blake Barton and Ty Allen on a triple. Jake Maddox scored Sergeant on a single. Two runs scored on Davis's single through the right side. Allen doubled to left-center field. Barton brought home Allen on an RBI single to left and scored on a passed ball. The Bruins led 14-4 after the fifth inning.
  • Belmont scored three more runs in the sixth inning. Wyatt Fooks scored on Allen's RBI single. Barton brought home Dean Spoto on a single through the right side. Allen later scored on a wild pitch. The Bruins led 17-5 after six innings.
  • Butler scored two runs in the seventh inning.
  • Belmont handled business in game two to win 17-6.
Series Recap
  • Belmont completed a four-game sweep for the first time since March 14-17, 2023, over Lindenwood.
  • Ty Allen finished the series 10-for-16 with six runs, two home runs and 10 RBIs.
  • Gardner Lawrence went 5-for-8, with a three-run home run in game two of Sunday's doubleheader. He finished the series with five RBIs.
  • Blake Barton totaled nine hits, two doubles, a home run and six RBIs.
  • Charlies Davis tied Allen for the team high with 10 RBIs on nine hits. Davis had four extra-base hits on Friday with two triples. Davis stole three bases.
  • Pete Daniel scored eight runs and recorded seven hits.
  • Nolan Sergeant had five hits.
  • Mike Sprocket had five RBIs in game one of Friday's doubleheader. He finished the series with three home runs and six hits.
  • Jake Maddox had three extra base hits against the Bulldogs, including a triple.
  • Jake Timbes picked up the win in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. Timbes tossed a season-five innings. And six strikeouts.
  • Zach Hernandez struck out a career-high six batters in his 2.2-inning start in game two on Sunday. Hernandez allowed no earned runs; he hasn't allowed an earned run this season.
  • Logan Brock struck out 3 batters in 2.1 innings of relief work in game two on Sunday.
  • Will Pryor and Andrew Perry picked up wins on the mound Saturday. Pryor threw six innings in game one, allowed two runs on five hits, and struck out five batters. Perry threw 2.1 innings of relief in game two. He struck out three batters.
