NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Saturday was a historic game for the Bruins. Belmont (19-26, 7-8 MVC) and Valparaiso (8-29, 3-14 MVC) faced off in game two of their weekend series at E.S. Rose Park. Fans in attendance witnessed sophomore
Zane Brown throw the 12
th no-hitter in program history. Brown's stellar performance and
Pete Daniel's home run clinched a series victory for the Bruins, with a 1-0 win over the Beacons.
The only run of the game came in the third inning.
Pete Daniel hit a two-out solo home run to left field. His fifth home run of the season – second of the series – gave Belmont a 1-0 lead.
Daniel's big fly was all Belmont needed, as
Zane Brown handled business on the mound. The right-hander battled through the fifth inning, after issuing two walks. Brown got Aidan Thaxton to ground out to second base and leave two runners on base.
Brown retired the next 13 batters in the game. In the top of the ninth with two outs and a full count, Brown struck out Connor Giusti to complete the first no-hitter in 11 years by a Bruin.
Brown recorded the 12
th no-hitter in program history. It was the first no-hitter since the combined no-no by James Buckelew and Greg Brody on April 5, 2014, against UT Martin. Brown's performance was the first no-hitter by a single pitcher since Lance Sewell's gem against Martin Methodist on April 17, 1997. Brown set a new career high with nine strikeouts and picked up his second win of the season.
