EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Belmont (22-26, 11-9 MVC) and Evansville (14-31, 8-12 MVC) continued their weekend series Saturday afternoon at German American Bank Field. Both teams put up crooked numbers on the scoreboard in a game that turned into a high-scoring contest. Trailing 8-6 entering the ninth inning, Belmont's offense exploded for seven runs and eight hits to come back and win 13-6, to clinch the series victory.
Scoring Action
- Ty Allen hit a leadoff solo home run in the second inning. Charlie Davis hit a two-out RBI single through the left side. Belmont took an early 2-0 lead.
- Evansville tied the game in the bottom of the second on a pair of home runs.
- The Purple Aces scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Evansville took its first lead of the series, 6-2.
- The Bruins tied the game in the seventh inning. Landon Godsey hit an infield ground ball that scored Davis on a throwing error. Ty Allen hit a three-run home run – his second homer – to even the game at 6-6.
- Evansville went back in front 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
- Belmont erupted in the top of the ninth inning. Mike Sprockett tied the game at 8-8 on a two-run home run to right field. Cade Batchelor gave Belmont the lead on his first career hit, two runs scored for Belmont to move ahead 10-8. Blake Barton poked an RBI single through the left side. Godsey reached on another fielder's choice that allowed Davis to score. Sprockett capped off the scoring with his second hit of the inning, an RBI single to right-center field. Belmont held on to their 13-8 lead to win the game and clinch the series victory.
Bruin Bullets
- Charlie Davis had a season-high four hits with two runs and an RBI. He also swiped a stolen base.
- Blake Barton recorded three hits and an RBI single.
- Landon Godsey had a pair of hits and RBIs.
- Mike Sprockett went 2-for-6 with the game-tying home run in the ninth inning. He finished with three RBIs.
- Ty Allen went 3-for-5 and launched two home runs. He finished the game with four RBIs.
- Zane Brown allowed three runs and five hits in 5.1 innings. Brown struck out two Purple Aces in his start.
- Andrew Perry improved to 3-2 on the season. The freshman tossed three innings and struck out four batters.
- Belmont's 19 hits were the second most by the team this season.
- Evansville's home run in the second inning put an end to Belmont's remarkable 40-inning scoreless inning streak.
- The Bruins extend their win streak to six games.
