NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont (23-27, 12-10 MVC) and Murray State (33-12, 15-7 MVC) began their weekend series Friday night at E.S. Rose Park. Despite Belmont outhitting the Racers, Murray State's four runs in the second inning – three being unearned – were the difference in the ball game. Murray State took game one of the series, 7-3.
Scoring Action
- Belmont's Blake Barton smoked a solo home run to left field in the first inning. Barton's third home run of the season gave Belmont a 1-0 lead.
- Murray State capitalized on a throwing error by Joe Ruzicka in the second inning. A pair of wild pitches allowed Will Vierling to score. Brady Grabowski gave the Racers the lead with an RBI infield single. With the bases loaded, Dustin Mercer brought home two more runs on a single to left-center field. The Racers led 4-1 after the top of the second inning.
- Jake Maddox and the Bruins responded in the bottom of the second. Maddox lined a two-out RBI single to left field. Murray State led 4-2 after two innings.
- Conner Cunningham extended Murray State's lead in the sixth inning. Cunningham hit a two-run home run to right field, to make it a 6-2 Racer lead.
- The Bruins had a prime opportunity to add some runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Barton and Godsey drew walks to start the inning. Mike Sprockett smashed a hard one-hopper to Murray State second baseman Dom Decker. The ball bounced away into shallow right-center field and scored Barton from second base. The Racers went to the bullpen and brought in Dylan Zentko, who retired the next three batters. Murray State held on to a 6-3 lead after six innings.
- Murray State added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning. Luke Mistone hit into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded and one out, Jonathan Hogart scored on the play. The Racers extended their lead, 7-3.
Bruin Bullets
- Joe Ruzicka threw six innings and allowed six runs, three of which were unearned. He also struck out five batters.
- Lake Morris allowed one run and surrendered no hits in his two innings of work. The freshman struck out three Racers.
- Owen Marsh tossed a scoreless eighth inning with a punchout.
- Blake Barton went 2-for-3Â with a home run.
- Mike Sprockett had two hits and an RBI single.
- Jake Maddox had an RBI single in the second inning.
